I dreampt that I was floating
through the apartment complex I lived in last year. At first, I wasn't
aware of being there. I was thinking of other things, and was happily distracted
by having a conversation with Patrick. Then I realized that Erik was there.
He wandered aimlessly, going in and then out of the same set of doors,
over and over, looking like he was pacing, and generally being distraught.
"What are you doing here?"
I asked. He looked up at me, squinting as thought I was a bright source
of light, or consternation, I couldn't tell which.
"This is where I haunt,
now." He said, "Every ghost needs a place to haunt"
"I lived here once. It's
a dreary place. I would think you'd be much happier haunting one of the
theatres on campus, or even the English department building. Hamilton Smith
has such lovely ionic columns..."
"I don't know how to get
there," he told me.
I told him to follow me,
and we walked up the street. Only I kept skipping sections of road. I was
in one place one moment, and another place several yards ahead only a split
second later. Erik couldn't do this, so I waited at the corner for him
to catch up. We walked down another street in much the same fashion.
When we got to the corner,
I pointed out Hamilton Smith, and he nodded. "It's right there," I said,
and indicated that I was going to go.
"Can I have a kiss?" he
asked. I shook my head, "no," and started off. I noticed, then that he
was just standing at the corner, looking lost. I turned back and stood
beside him. The sky was light, and I could feel the cold damp air. The
chill didn't bother me a bit. I realized then, that we didn't have to walk,
because I could fly. I jumped into the air, and I heard a thousand tiny,
bell-like voices shouting, "Be careful!" and "Oh, this will be the end
of her!"
I lead him from landmark
to landmark, and then walked through the doors of Ham. Smith. He wanted
to go in, but couldn't, until I invited him in. Once we were in the doors,
he took a look around.
"Yes, you're right," he
said. "The energy here is much better."
I kissed him on the cheek,
opened a hole in the air into the blackness, stepped through, and woke.
